CiTechCare promotes a commemorative session of the World Diabetes Day

The Portuguese Society of Diabetology (PSD) invited ciTechCare to promote a session dedicated to World Diabetes Day, that took place at Arquivo bookstore, on november 14, at 17:30 PM.

The panel of participants was composed by several professionals from clinical research, medicine, nutrition and physical exercise areas and a patient diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which enabled a global vision and a sharing of knowledge and experiences, in a session moderated by Elisabete Cruz, journalist at Jornal de Leiria.

Diabetes type 2 is a very silent disease, and according to Alexandra Vieira, endocrinologist, ‘symptoms arise when the disease is decompensated, since complications can take 5 to 10 years to settle’.

In this open conversation, patients diagnosed with diabetes also talked about their lifestyle changes and their commitment to daily tasks.

In order to modify the growth trend of diabetes, Raquel Oliveira, nutricionist on diabetes appointment, claims that “the prevention is the best medicine, and it involves education”, alerting to the need to engage children in the process of cooking.

The event was an initiative of the Fundamental and Translational Research Group of PSD and was also promoted in Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra and Vila Real. The main goal was to contribute to the promotion of diabetes literacy.

This work was funded by Portuguese national funds provided by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. FCT/UI/05704/2020
