ciTechCare Senior Researcher Sónia Gonçalves Pereira and PhD students Catarina Marques and Katie Phair participated in the largest annual Science and Innovation event in Portugal, which was held from the 3rd to the 5th of July at Alfândega do Porto, under the theme “+Science for One Health and global well-being”. They joined the Portuguese Science Summit 2024 on the 4th of July to present a total of 5 e-posters regarding the projects their are working on at ciTechCare, under the guidance of the Senior Researcher.
Sónia Gonçalves Pereira presented two e-posters that derived from CeliAct(TIV) project, one presenting the project layout and preliminary results on the biochemical characterization of bacterial-digested fragments of gliadin, the most immunogenic portion of gluten, the trigger of this autoimmune disease, entitled CeliAct(TIV) – Translocation, Inflammation and Virulence: dissecting mechanisms of gluten- microbiota interactions in Celiac Disease, and other on nutritional behaviours of Celiac Disease patients and the petition to the Portuguese Government she started regarding the need for more support to Celiac Disease diet, entitled Doença celíaca: avaliação da adesão à dieta mediterrânea e a cidadania que a ciência também impõe (petição pela equidade na gestão da doença). The third e-posters she presented was on a different area, regarding the microbial air quality of classrooms, following her participation in BreathIn international project.
Two more e-posters were presented by Catarina Marques with the title Spread of multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales in long-term healthcare unit’s environment and a 2nd e-poster entitled Bacterial and fungal load in the air of long-term healthcare units – a concerning trend?, developed under the scope of her PhD work and within the international funded projects IPCPredict and Upgrade.
Also Katie Phair, a PhD student from Ireland currently taking a 2-months internship at ciTechCare, presented an e-poster entitled Celiac Disease and imipenem resistance: a mere coincidence or a potential feature?, breaking grounds in this still fairly unknown subject of antimicrobial resistance and Celiac Disease.
