Paper published in the international scientific journal DIABETOLOGIA, of which Maria Pedro Guarino is also co-author

On March was awarded the Prize Pulido Valente Ciência 2018, in the area of Biomedical Engineering, to a paper published in the international scientific journal, Diabetologia of which Maria Pedro Guarino is also co-author.

The objective of the study “Bioelectronic modulation of carotid sinus nerve activity in the rat: a potential therapeutic approach to type 2 diabetes”, whose first author is Joana Sacramento, of the Center for Studies on Chronic Diseases of the CEDOC of NOVA Medical School, was to evaluate the effect of a bioelectronic application in the nerve that connects the carotid body to the brain, the carotid sinus nerve, in animal models of type 2 diabetes.

In collaboration with the multinational company Galvani Bioelectronics, the team showed that it is possible to restore insulin sensitivity as well as maintain the glycemic control in diabetic animals submitted to implantation of the bioelectronic device, highlighting the possibility of developing a new therapy for type 2 diabetes, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide.
