Research on exercise training for lung cancer patients was awarded with Dr. Eduardo Esteves Pinto prize

After being distinguished with the best oral communication at the 1st Portuguese Congress in Lung Cancer, in October 2022, the study entitled “Home-based preoperative exercise training for lung cancer patients undergoing surgery: A feasibility trial” was recognized again at the 1st Iberic Thoracic Surgery Meeting, from november 25 to 27, with the Dr. Eduardo Esteves Pinto prize.

This study was presented by ciTechCare researcher Pedro Machado and was elected as the best oral communication of the event.

Besides Pedro Machado, Joana Cruz and Sara Pimenta, this work resulted in a joint collaboration between researchers from University of Coimbra and healthcare professionals from pneumology and thoracic surgery services of Hospital Center of Leiria and Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Coimbra.

The final conclusion was that the pre-operative physical exercise at home is a feasible and secure intervention for patients with lung cancer eligible for curative surgery. Besides, it also revealed great improvements in terms of global life quality and muscle strenght after an exercise program, which indicates that this intervention can optimize the preparation of patients who are undergoing a surgical treatment.
